Understanding The Snake
The Snake is built around four Gooey Graphs, three modulation sources, and two control units that work together to filter, modulate, and morph your sounds.
The basic workflow is straightforward: simply drag and drop a modulation source onto a control parameter and start shaping movement.
However, to unlock the full potential of The Snake, it’s helpful to understand how the control units interact with the modulation sources.
Phaser, Flanger, and Comb Filter Section
Located in the upper-left corner is the phaser, flanger, and comb filter control unit. Unlike traditional subtractive filters, this section focuses on additive filtering techniques that introduce new frequency content and resonances into your signal.
With modes such as CPE, CPEW, CPLP, and many others, each filter configuration imparts its own unique tonal character and movement. For example, the CPLP mode combines a positive-spike comb filter in series with a state-variable low-pass filter. When animated with one of The Snake’s modulation sources, it can create sweeping, dub-inspired movements that glide across the frequency spectrum.
Most modes within this section provide controls for:
- Feedback and amplification
- Filter length, cutoff, or tuning parameters
- Mix control
- Pan positioning
- Output volume
Although these controls are grouped together in a single unit, the extensive modulation system allows this section to serve purposes far beyond traditional filtering. By assigning modulation to volume, pan, mix, or feedback parameters, the phaser section can function as an auto-panner, volume gate, rhythmic performer, or an experimental modulation processor.
While it doesn’t offer the modular complexity of Apotheca, it provides more than enough flexibility to explore deep multi-modulation workflows.
Filter Section
After introducing new harmonics and resonances with the phaser, flanger, and comb filter section, the signal can be further shaped using the Filter control unit.
This section contains a wide variety of traditional subtractive filters, including:
- Low-pass filters
- High-pass filters
- Band-pass filters
- Multi-mode filters
- EQ shelving filters
- Formant filters
- Specialty filter designs
The Filter unit provides the familiar controls expected from a subtractive filter:
- Cutoff Frequency
- Resonance
- Additional shaping controls on selected filter models
- Mix
- Pan
- Volume
Unlike the additive filter section, the cutoff control here determines which frequencies are allowed to pass through the signal path and which frequencies are removed.
Many of the more advanced filter types include additional parameters that can dramatically alter their behavior, opening the door to everything from subtle tonal shaping to aggressive spectral transformations.
Modulation and Performance
Because virtually every parameter can be modulated, The Snake excels at creating movement.
By assigning synchronized square waves, envelopes, LFOs, or custom Gooey Graphs to parameters such as volume, pan, cutoff, resonance, feedback, and mix, multiple layers of rhythmic interaction can emerge. These interactions often reveal hidden grooves, melodies, and hooks buried within otherwise static audio.
This is where The Snake separates itself from traditional filter-box effects. Rather than simply sweeping a cutoff frequency, it encourages interconnected modulation systems that evolve over time.
Sound Design Possibilities
The Snake is not intended to replace a synthesizer, sampler, or fully generative instrument. Instead, it acts as a powerful modulation layer that can transform existing audio into something entirely new.
One of its greatest strengths is versatility.
At subtle settings, The Snake can introduce gentle movement, adding a touch of waviness through elongated comb filters or slow phaser sweeps. At more extreme settings, it can completely dismantle the original source material, replacing recognizable audio with a constantly shifting landscape of feedback, resonances, and modulated filtering.
Driven feedback networks, synchronized modulation, and evolving filter movements can create textures that feel only partially connected to the original sound source. The result is an instrument-like effect processor capable of producing swirling, sweeping, and morphing sonic energy that moves with a life of its own.
