INTRODUCTION:

Lo-Fi Sound Design Reimagined

Mortamer is Gooey’s creative take on modern Lo-Fi production tools. Designed for producers who want character, texture, and grit, Mortamer centers around three powerful modules and two flexible modulation sources that add movement to the modules.

At the heart of Mortamer is the Redux unit, delivering Lo-Fi sample-rate reduction, dithering, bitcrushing, and even pseudo ring modulation. Whether you’re degrading audio for vintage flavor or crafting glitchy digital artifacts, Redux gives you precise control over the sonic destruction.

To push sound design further, Mortamer includes modulating filters that add motion, depth, and tonal variation—perfect for transforming static sounds into evolving textures.

Mortamer excels at layering tracks, adding static, and creating distinctive aliased artifacts that help sounds stand out in a mix. With over 70 presets, it offers inspiration for beginners and deep control for experienced producers.

(1) Preset menu:

(a) Preset Save – Click to save the current preset. Presets are stored in a local user folder.

(b) Preset Scroll – Scroll through available presets.

(c) Preset List – Opens the full preset menu.
Tip: Ctrl+Z = Undo, Ctrl+Y = Redo.

 

(2) I/O Controls:

(2a) Input / Output Level – Adjust pre- and post-processing gain. Each control ranges from +24 dB to −60 dB.

(3) Soft Clipper – Toggle to enable. Adds subtle saturation and allows an additional +24 dB of drive, making it easier to push the signal into the effects.

(4a) Master Mix – Blends the dry input signal with the processed Mortamer signal.

(4b) Master Pan – Controls the stereo balance of the output signal.

Lo-FI:

(5) Bypass Light – Toggles the Redux unit on or off.

(6) Aliasing Mode – Selects one of three aliasing modes, each with a different tonal character.

  • (6a) Aliased – Traditional sample-rate reduction with bright, full-bodied aliasing and strong high-frequency artifacts.

  • (6b) Swamp – Adds an interpolated offset delay before the Redux stage, softening the high end and producing a darker, filtered sound.

  • (6c) Waste – Adds delays before and after the Redux stage, thickening the signal and producing a heavier, muddier Lo-Fi texture.

(7) Redux – Reduces the sample rate of the incoming signal, creating classic Lo-Fi degradation.

(8) Jitter – Adds random variation and wobble to the Redux effect.

(9) Dither – Blends noise into the signal relative to the input level.

(10) Mod A/B – Applies modulation from the selected source to the Redux control. A light indicator around the knob shows modulation amount and activity.

(11) DC Offset – Toggles a small offset voltage in the bit-reduction stage, adding additional noise and harmonic texture.

(12) Bit Reduction – Reduces the bit depth of the signal. Works well with light dithering and on drum sources. At extreme settings, the signal may disappear.

(13) Pseudo Ring Modulation – Applies a ring-mod–style effect tied to the Bit Reduction control. Turning the RM control increases amplitude, not modulation frequency. For robotic beeps and digital tones, combine high RM with moderate Bit Reduction.

Morph Filter:

(14) Bypass Light – Toggles the Formant unit on or off.

(15) Formant Mode – Select one of five vowel modes. Each mode blends between two vowel sounds (e.g., Ah → Ya or E → O).

(16) Q Control – Adjusts the resonance of the formant filter. Higher values increase presence but may introduce a more artificial tone.

(17) Morph – A modulatable control that blends between the selected vowel sounds.

(18) Mod A/B – Applies modulation from the selected source to the Morph control. A light indicator around the knob shows the modulation amount and activity.

Filter:

(19) Bypass Light – Toggles the Filter unit on or off.

(20) Filter Mode – Switches between Low-Pass and High-Pass filtering.

(21) Q Control – Adjusts filter resonance. Mortamer allows for high resonance levels, which can produce aggressive or extreme effects.

(22) Cutoff – Sets the filter cutoff frequency from 20 Hz to 21,000 Hz.

(23) Mod A/B – Applies modulation from the selected source to the Cutoff control. A light indicator around the knob shows modulation amount and activity.

MODULATORS:

Menu:

(26) Modulation Selection – Choose the modulation mode for the plugin.

ADSR:

(27) ADSR – The envelope triggers when the input exceeds the trigger voltage and releases when it falls below.

  • (27a) Attack – Sets the time for the envelope to rise from zero to peak.

  • (27b) Decay – Sets the time for the envelope to fall from peak to the sustain level.

  • (27c) Sustain – Sets the amplitude level maintained while the trigger is active.

  • (27d) Release – Sets the time for the envelope to fall from the sustain level to zero after the trigger ends.

(28) Trigger – Sets the input voltage required to activate the envelope.

(29) Sidechain – When enabled, allows external tracks to trigger the ADSR envelope.

Envelope Follower:

(30) Rise – Sets how quickly the envelope responds to increasing signal levels.

(31) Sensitivity – Adjusts how strongly the envelope reacts to input changes.

(32) Fall – Sets how quickly the envelope responds to decreasing signal levels.

(33) Sidechain – When enabled, allows external tracks to trigger the envelope follower.

Low Frequency Oscillator:

(34) Timing Controls

  • Tempo Lock – Syncs the LFO to the host tempo.

  • Dotted – Multiplies the synced rate by 1.5× for a syncopated rhythm.

  • Triplet – Sets the synced rate to 2/3 of the tempo.
    Note: Dotted and Triplet only work when Tempo Lock is engaged.

(35) Wave Selection – Choose from Sine, Triangle, Pulse, Saw, Rectified, or Ramp waveforms.

(36) Rate Slider – Adjusts the LFO rate. When synced, the rate scales with the DAW tempo; in free mode, it ranges from very slow up to 20 Hz.
