Sizzle is a production tool that is used to boost harmonic content within a frequency band. The process and order of operations are fairly simple, although the plug-in works well for fine-tuning tracks.
First, the signal is filtered into a bandpass, where the low and high cutoffs. The transition bands into the bandpass have a 24-decibel rolloff.
Next, the presence control applies a non-linear saturation, along with a limiter, and gradually mixes in the sizzled sound.
overview
(1) The Gooey Icon: when hovering the mouse over the icon, a tooltip will appear, which will provide the version number of the product.
(1b) When clicking on the Gooey icon the plugin will be bypassed. To indicate it is bypassed, the icon will change color, and a tooltip will appear.
(2) Preset Save Icon: click to save a preset. Presets will be stored in a local user file folder.
(3) Preset Menu: click to see the full list of saved presets. Warning: Press Ctrl+z to undo an accidental preset change.
(4) Preset Scroll Buttons: click to scroll through the list of presets.
(5) Spectrum Visualizer: This depicts a visual reference to the frequency response of the signal in real time. Note, frequencies are log-scaled.
(6) Lowcut: Determines where the low band roll-off will occur. Note that the low-cut and high-cut controls can never overlap.
(7) Highcut: Determines where the high band roll-off will occur.
(8) Presence: The presence control will add up to 24 decibels of non-linear saturation. The presence control also determines the amount of mix back the sizzle effect provides. So, when the presence control is to the left, the plug-in is essentially bypassed. Engaging the control to extreme levels can and will clip the signal. Use carefully.
(8) Tooltip: When hovering the mouse over controls, a tooltip message will appear. When engaging controls, more messaging will appear to provide the exact locations of control positions.
(9)(a) Solo: to hear the sizzle as a solo, then press Ctrl + W, at the bottom of the screen, ‘solo’ will appear, and only the bandpass single will be heard.
(9)(b) Lock: to lock the sliders, so they both move in unison, press Ctrl + L. When the lock mode is engaged, a lock icon will appear at the bottom of the plug-in window.
(10) Mode: to change the filtering mode, press Ctrl + M. As of now, there are two modes: the traditional 24-decibel roll-off, and the FIR mode, which has a steeper rolloff and linear phase response. In FIR mode, the signal is brighter and the passband is narrower.
Note, when FIR mode is engaged, then an icon beneath the presence control will appear.
(11) Output: balance the levels of the wet output signal using the output control. The control at the mid position provides no gain, and can boost up twenty-four decibels or cut sixty decibels.
